Why Has My Moocall HEAT Missed a Cow in Heat?

What to check if a heat was not detected

Written by Angelica Torres

If you feel your Moocall HEAT system has missed a heat, there are a few key factors to review.

First Things to Consider

  • Is this a one-off case, or happening frequently?

  • When did you start breeding?

  • What is your cow-to-bull ratio?

  • Has the cow cycled recently?

A single missed heat can happen occasionally
Multiple missed heats may indicate a setup issue

Common Causes of Missed Heats

1. Too Many Cows per Bull

  • If there are too many cows, the bull may not interact with all animals

Recommended: 1 bull per ~50 cows

2. Not Enough Bull Activity

The system detects heat based on:

  • Time

  • Activity (movement/mounting)

  • Proximity (distance to tag)

If these are not strong enough, the heat may not trigger an alert.

A bull that is lazy or not moving much, inexperienced or not actively engaging with cows may not trigger enough activity for detection

3. Tag Issues

Check:

  • Tag is still in the ear

  • Tag is not damaged

  • Tag is correctly assigned in the app

4. Early Stage of Breeding

  • Bulls need 3–5 days to settle when first introduced

During this time activity may be inconsistent and some heats may be missed

What Should I Do?

  1. Check tags and assignments

  2. Review bull activity and ratios

  3. Consider recent changes (movement, setup, breeding start)

If you notice:

  • Several missed heats over a short period

  • No alerts at all

  • Repeated issues with the same animals
