Why Isn’t My Moocall HEAT Sending Any Alerts?

Troubleshooting when your collar is not detecting heats

If your Moocall HEAT system is not sending alerts, go through the checklist below:

1. Is the Collar Turned On?

  • The device should show a flashing blue light

  • No light = device is OFF

To turn the device on:

  • Press and hold the power button until the light turns on

  • Wait until you see the flashing blue light (this means it is active and connected)

Always check this before placing it on the bull

2. Has the Collar Been Charged?

  • After charging, the device automatically powers off

  • Must be manually turned back on

3. Is There Network Signal?

  • The collar uses mobile network

  • Poor signal = no alerts sent

4. Is the Bull in an Exclusion Zone?

  • Exclusion tags pause heat detection for ~1 hour

  • Used to avoid false alerts in yards or handling areas

5. Are All Cows Properly Tagged?

  • Every cow with the bull must have a Moocall RFID tag

  • The system depends on tag reads (up to ~2m range)

  • Tag should be linked to the correct cow in the app

To confirm the correct reading of the tags, please perform a tag test.

6. Is There Enough Bull Activity?

The system detects heat based on:

  • Time

  • Activity (movement/mounting)

  • Proximity (distance to tag)

If these thresholds are not met, no alert is triggered. If the bull is Lazy / inactive, lame, overworked (too many cows) or too young or inexperienced, he may not interact enough to trigger detections. Remember the recommended ratio is 1 bull per 50 cows.

7. Are There Too Many or Too Few Bulls?

  • Too many bulls → competition & false readings

  • Too few bulls → missed heats due to low coverage

Use one active bull at a time and rotate if needed.

8. Has the Bull Recently Joined the Herd?

  • Bulls need 3–5 days to settle

  • Early behaviour may be:

    • Overactive → false alerts

    • Underactive → missed heats

Always allow a settling period before relying on alerts.

9. Is Your Farm Setup Affecting Performance?

  • Outdoor = best performance

  • Indoor setups require:

    • Enough space (~5m² per cow)

    • Suitable layout (not narrow/slatted sheds)

10. Could There Be Tag or System Reading Issues?

In some cases:

  • Tags may be faulty and stop reading

  • Tags may be lost or broken

If multiple heats are missed, download a tag report as some tags may need replacing.

11. Could It Be a Technical Issue?

Less common, but possible:

  • Device not checking in

  • Internal fault (impact, water damage)

  • SIM/network issue

Important

Not receiving alerts does not usually mean the device is faulty
Most issues come from:

  • Tagging setup

  • Bull behaviour

  • Farm conditions
