How Accurate Is Moocall HEAT?

How many heats will the Moocall HEAT system detect?

Moocall HEAT is designed to detect the majority of heats, using the natural behaviour of the bull.

It is as accurate as your bull and enhances this by monitoring activity 24/7.

Proven Performance

Based on field data from users in Ireland in 2020:

  • 96.5% submission rate within 3 weeks

  • ~80% in-calf rate within 3 weeks

This is significantly above the national average of:

  • ~64% in-calf rate (Teagasc benchmark)

How the System Detects Heat

The collar continuously monitors the bull’s behaviour, including:

  • Movement and activity

  • Time spent with specific cows

  • Proximity to RFID tags

These three key factors allow the system to identify when a cow is in heat:

Time + Activity + Proximity = Heat detection

Why It Works So Well

The system builds on the most reliable heat detection method available: the bull

  • Bulls naturally detect silent heats and short cycles

  • The collar acts as an electronic version of a chin-ball harness

  • It captures activity that may be missed by visual observation

Important Factors That Affect Accuracy

While the system is highly accurate, performance depends on correct setup and conditions:

1. Outdoor vs Indoor Use

  • Designed primarily for outdoor use

  • Indoor use (especially overcrowded sheds) can:

    • Reduce mounting activity

    • Lower detection accuracy

    • Increase false alerts

2. Bull Performance

The system relies on the bull:

  • A healthy, active bull = best results

  • A tired, lame, or inactive bull = reduced detection

3. Tagging All Animals

  • All cows with the bull must be tagged

  • Untagged cows can:

    • Affect system thresholds

    • Lead to missed heats

4. Correct Cow-to-Bull Ratio

  • Recommended: 1 bull per ~50 cows

  • Too many cows β†’ reduced interaction

  • Too many bulls β†’ conflicting activity

What About Missed or False Heats?

Like any system based on animal behaviour:

  • Some heats may be:

    • Silent or very short

    • Low activity

  • Occasional false alerts may occur due to:

    • Grouping animals in yards

    • Feeding times

    • Excess activity or disturbance

These can usually be managed with:

  • Exclusion zones

  • Proper setup and ratios

Summary

Moocall HEAT delivers:

  • High accuracy based on natural bull behaviour

  • Proven results above national averages

  • Continuous monitoring that reduces missed heats

Remember: The better the setup (bull, space, tagging), the better the results.
