If a cow calves without receiving a Moocall alert, there are several possible reasons. In most cases, it is related to device status, connectivity, or the speed of the calving.
Below are the most common causes.
1. The Sensor Was Not Powered On
The sensor must be powered on and connected to the network to send alerts.
Check that the device is showing a flashing blue light every 5 seconds, which indicates that the sensor is powered on and connected.
If the sensor is not flashing blue, it will not be able to send alerts.
2. No Mobile Signal
If the sensor cannot connect to the mobile network, alerts cannot be sent.
If the device is flashing multiple colours (red, orange, green, blue), it means the sensor is still trying to connect to the network and is not yet connected.
While the sensor is flashing multiple colours, it cannot send alerts.
Once the sensor begins flashing blue, you can confirm connectivity by performing an SMS test:
Press the button twice quickly while the device is flashing blue.
You should then receive a confirmation message.
If the device never settles on a flashing blue light, it may indicate poor mobile coverage in that location.
3. Incorrect Phone Number Connected
If the wrong phone number is connected to the device, alerts may be sent but not received by you.
You can verify the connected number by performing the SMS test.
4. Very Fast Calving
In some cases, particularly with older cows, labour can progress very quickly.
If the cow moves rapidly from early labour to calving, there may not be enough tail activity detected to trigger the alert sequence.
This situation is uncommon but possible.
Important
While the Moocall sensor is designed to detect the majority of calvings, no monitoring system can guarantee 100% detection in every case.
If missed alerts occur repeatedly, please contact the Moocall support team so we can investigate further.
