General Guidelines
As a rule of thumb:
Year-round calving herds:
1 sensor can typically cover around 80 cows, as only a small number of animals will be close to calving at any one time.Seasonal calving over 4–6 weeks:
1 sensor for approximately 30 cows is usually recommended, as many animals may be due to calve within a short period.
These are general guidelines and may vary depending on how you manage the sensors.
Moving the Sensor Between Cows
After a cow calves, the sensor can be removed and placed on the next cow due to calve.
If managed efficiently, one sensor can monitor several calvings each week.
The sensor’s long battery life (30+ days) allows it to be used continuously throughout the calving season without frequent charging.
Managing Sensors During the Calving Season
Some farmers choose to use one sensor only and place it on cows they want to monitor more closely.
For example, the sensor may be used on:
Heifers
Cows that had previous calving difficulties
Animals that farmers want to keep a closer eye on
Because the sensor can be moved from one cow to another, this approach allows farmers to monitor the animals that are most likely to need attention.
