The Moocall calving sensor sends several types of SMS alerts to keep you informed about calving activity, battery status, and device status.

Attaching the sensor to the cow does not trigger a message immediately. The sensor begins monitoring tail movement and will only send alerts when certain conditions are detected.

Calving Activity Alerts

First Warning – High Activity (Last 1 Hour)

This is the first alert indicating that increased tail activity has been detected.

This means the cow may be entering the early stages of labour.

Second Warning – High Activity (Last 2 Hours)

If tail activity continues, a second alert will be sent approximately one hour later.

In many cases, calving will occur within the next hour.

Break Warning

If the sensor has been on the cow for more than 4 days, you will receive a reminder message recommending a break.

This helps prevent tail irritation and unnecessary alerts.

In a typical calving, the sensor sends:

1️⃣ A High Activity – Last 1 Hour alert
2️⃣ Followed by a High Activity – Last 2 Hours alert about one hour later

These alerts usually occur around 1–2 hours before the calf is born.

However, every cow is different, so alerts may sometimes occur earlier or later than expected.

Sensor Status Alerts

Battery Warning

You will receive a message when the sensor battery becomes low (around 15%).

At this point, you should charge the sensor as soon as possible.

SMS Test Confirmation

When you perform an SMS test, you will receive a confirmation message to verify that your phone number is correctly connected to the sensor.

Off Tail Message

If the sensor is powered on but not attached to a cow’s tail, you may receive a message indicating that the device is not currently on a tail.

This message confirms that the sensor is active but not monitoring a cow.

To send this message, the algorithm must detect:

  1. An impact or significant movement, and

  2. No movement for approximately 1 hour afterwards

If the device detects any movement during that hour, the timer restarts.

Because of this, the Off Tail message may not appear immediately after removing the sensor from the cow.

Sometimes simply removing the sensor from the cow’s tail can generate the required impact followed by no movement, which may trigger the message. However, the system is not specifically designed to detect when the sensor is manually removed from the tail.

For this reason, you should not expect to receive an Off Tail message every time the sensor is taken off the cow, and there is no need to worry if this message does not appear after manual removal.
