Correctly attaching the sensor is essential for the Moocall system to work properly.
If the sensor is too loose, too tight, or positioned incorrectly, it may cause false alerts or the sensor falling off.

Step 1: Turn the Sensor On

Before attaching the sensor, make sure it is powered on and connected.

The sensor should be flashing blue every few seconds.

⚠️ IMPORTANT

Do not attach the sensor to the cow unless it is flashing blue.

If the sensor is still flashing multiple colours, it is still connecting to the network and will not send alerts.

Step 2: Position the Sensor on the Tail

Place the sensor on the tail opposite the vulva.

This position allows the sensor to correctly detect tail lifting behaviour before calving.

If the cow has a smaller tail, place the sensor slightly higher on the tail where it is thicker. This helps the sensor sit securely and prevents it from sliding down or falling off.

The sensor should sit firmly on the tail while still allowing slight sideways movement.

Step 3: Insert the Strap into the Ratchet

  1. Feed the toothed strap into the ratchet system.

  2. Close the ratchet paddle.

  3. Close the sensor door to lock the ratchet in place.

Step 4: Tighten the Strap

Pull the loose end of the strap until the sensor is firmly attached to the tail.

Check the fit by gently pulling the sensor downward on the tail.

  • The sensor should move slightly sideways

  • The sensor should not slide downward

If it slides down the tail, tighten the strap by one or two additional notches.

Important: Do Not Overtighten

⚠️ IMPORTANT: DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN

The sensor must be firm but not overly tight.

If the sensor is too tight it can:

  • Cause false alerts

  • Cause discomfort to the cow

  • Potentially cause damage to the tail

Step 5: Adjust the Rubber Liner (If Needed)

The red rubber liner can be adjusted depending on the size of the cows’ tails in your herd.

The liner has marked cutting points that allow you to trim it for a better fit.

You may need to adjust the liner if:

  • The cow has a smaller tail

  • The sensor does not sit securely on the tail

⚠️ IMPORTANT

Make sure the rubber liner does not overlap on the tail.

If the liner overlaps, it can:

  • Cause discomfort for the cow

  • Trigger false alerts

Common Fitting Issues

Sensor Falls Off

If the sensor falls off the tail, check the following:

  • The strap may not be tight enough

  • The sensor may be placed too low on the tail

  • The red rubber is overlapping

Solution

Place the sensor opposite the vulva or slightly higher where the tail is thicker, then tighten the strap another click or two.

For cows with thinner tails (common in dairy cattle), placing the sensor slightly higher on the tail usually helps keep it secure.

If the rubber liner strap overlaps too much, you may need to remove one of the adjustable rubber strips.

Too Many Alerts

If you receive more than two alerts per animal or alerts much earlier than expected, this may indicate a fitting issue.

Possible causes include:

  • The sensor is too tight

  • The rubber liner is overlapping

  • The sensor is positioned too low on the tail

Solution

Adjust the fitting so the sensor is firm but not overly tight, and ensure the rubber liner fits the tail correctly.
