Moocall Sensor False Alarms or Early Alerts

Why am I receiving Moocall alerts when the cow is not calving?

In a standard calving, the Moocall sensor will send two High Activity alerts approximately one hour apart, usually around 1.5 hours before the calf is born.

In some cases you may receive alerts when the cow is not yet calving, or alerts earlier than expected. This can happen for several reasons.

Common Causes of False Alarms

1. Sensor fitted too tightly

If the sensor is over-tightened, it may detect more movement than normal.

Solution:
Ensure the sensor can move slightly on the tail but is still secure.

2. Sensor left on the tail too long

The sensor should not remain on the cow for more than 4 days continuously.

After several days the cow may become irritated and move her tail more frequently.

Solution:
Remove the sensor for 3-4 hours and refit it if calving has not started.

3. Sensor fitted too low on the tail

If the sensor is positioned too low, normal tail movement can trigger alerts.

Solution:
Attach the sensor opposite to the vulva or higher on the tail:

4. Increased activity in the shed

Some situations may cause cows to move their tails more than usual.

Examples include:

  • Fresh straw added to the bedding

  • Another cow calving nearby

  • Lice causing the cow to scratch

  • Severe mastitis or discomfort

These situations can trigger alerts even though the cow is not yet calving.

Early Alerts or Difficult Calving Situations

If alerts occur but calving does not progress, it may indicate that the cow is experiencing difficulty during labour.

Some known causes include:

  • The calf has died before birth

  • The calf is too large to pass naturally

  • The calf is not positioned correctly (legs back, head down, backwards presentation)

  • The cow's cervix does not fully open

  • The cow suffers a prolapse before calving

  • Mineral deficiencies (such as low Selenium or Calcium)

  • A very active calf moving heavily before birth

IMPORTANT: If you receive alerts but there is little progress in calving, we recommend checking the cow as soon as possible, as assistance may be required.
